This is life. We’re born, we die. But, with creativity, I just have a faith. It’s not a faith of any particular religion because I worry that religions start wars. It’s a great spiritual belief that there is something really great there that I probably refer to as a spirit of goodness. I’m doing a choral piece at the moment for a choir in Oxford. I sort of talk to a spirit of goodness, because I don’t want to alienate Catholics, Jewish people, Muslims. ‘Cause I know we’re all good, there’s good in all of us. But that’s my belief, that there is something sort of magical there. And that was what helped me write “Yesterday.” I don’t quite know what it is. Something to do with me, something to do with my love of music and my faith in the process. But I don’t quite know what it is and I don’t want to know.9
Paul’s “I worry that religions start wars” is reasonable. Religion comes in as number two for causing historical atrocities. Number one is atheistic communism, which has taken the lives of more than 100 million people. But the problem runs deeper than either “religion” or “atheism.” Wars are caused by people. Human beings fight and kill over land, politics, money, women, and a million other things. So it seems strange to speak of the atrocities of religion, and in the next breath say, “I know that we are all good.” However, in view of the prevailing culture, I can still understand why he would say such a thing.
In 2010, a private Christian school in Dallas, Texas, refused to enroll a child because the child’s parents were lesbians. In a statement, school authorities said, “We regret the disappointment the mother feels, but also do not understand why she would want to enroll her child in a school that would undercut her own personal values at home.” Surprisingly, the child’s mother agreed with the school, saying, “I absolutely would not want her to partake in a school where they did not believe or condone the relationship that we have together.” The school had previously rejected an applicant who came from a homosexual household, fired an unmarried teacher who became pregnant, and removed a man “from leadership roles in the school” after he left his wife for another woman. The lesbian mother said she was raised in a Baptist home, so she felt the school could give her child a good education and impart “the basic Bible teachings . . . follow the Golden Rule, the Ten Commandments, be kind to your neighbor.” But she added, “The God that I know and the God that I love will love me and love my children no matter what.”10
When human beings don’t like God’s moral standards, it’s very common for us to make up our own god. But in doing so, we violate the second of the Ten Commandments: “You shall not make yourself a graven image…” This was Israel’s problem right down through their history.
